This debut album from Lawrence Arabia has been released almost simultaneously with the debut of his band 'proper' - The Reduction Agents 'The Dance Reduction Agents' - making comparisons between the two inevitable. Happily, Arabia's solo effort isn't just a compilation of tunes that didn't make the cut for The Reduction Agents release and is, as promised, much more an album of songs that 'didn't quite fit in the style of his band project.'
Whatever that style may be is hard to pin down. The one obvious tie-in with the Reduction Agents is the abundant use of Beach Boys-esque harmonies - Arabia has no problems hitting the high notes when required, and there's sumptuous backing vocals throughout the album that Brian Wilson would be proud of.
Beyond that though, we move into quite different territory, with some minimal electro-pop on 'Half the Right Size', alt-country on 'The Joke is in Your Hand', and even hints of Pulp's Jarvis Cocker at his lounging best in the faux-epic 'Talk About Good Times'.
Through all of it, Arabia's vaguely quirky sense of humour shines through ('Thistle tends to Stingle'), laced with a healthy dose of bathos. Every tune offers something special, each lyric is worth singing along with, and everyone should find songs on this album that they'll appreciate for years to come. Recommended.
