Laidback Aucklanders Voom have been around for a long time but it's taken a while for their second album to see the light of day - and we have quirky indie label Lil' Chief to thank for the fact that the songs that Buzz and co have been working on for so long are finally available.
The band has undergone major line-up changes since 1998's Now I Am Me, the most recent of which saw them acquiring a rhythm section courtesy of the now-defunct indie rockers Goodshirt, but the heart of the band is always Buzz, who delivers heartfelt and open lyrics like "You don’t even have a clue, my whole world revolves around you" with as much unabashed enthusiasm as he does his musings on being King Kong ("shoo, shoo") and being 'Happy Just Bumming Around' "not hassling anyone".
Standout tracks like 'We're So Lost" and "B Your Boy" have been floating around student and indie radio for a while, and are at once catchy and quirky enough to remain favourites, while some of the newer and lesser-known tracks show another side of Voom, more experimental and referential, with looped vocals and soul and gospel-inspired backing vocals popping up amongst the guitars and crooning that fans of the Voom live show have come to expect.
A clever and charming disc full of colloquialisms and classic pop harmonies. Recommended.
