Evermore - home-schooled brothers Dann, Peter and Jon Hume from Feilding, New Zealand - have been winning over audiences in Australia and New Zealand from their earliest days as competitors in NZ's high school Rockquest competition. Their debut, platinum-selling album Dreams (2005) propelled the band further into the limelight, with major industry kudos coming in NZ when they won the APRA Silver Scroll for songwriting, and Australia, where they picked up the MTV Supernova Breakthrough Act and were nominated for five awards at the 2005 Australian ARIA Awards. With their sophomore album Real Life (and album release gigs in Sydney, New York, London and Auckland) worldwide success would seem but a step away.
And, from the opener and title track 'Real Life', it's easy to understand why. Anthemic and uplifting, the band not only mine the same sort of musical landscape as their favourites the Beatles, Dylan and Bowie, but also the likes of more modern acts like Coldplay and early Radiohead and Australasia's own Crowded House.
With the help of John Alagia (who mixed Dreams, and has previously worked with John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band and Ben Folds), the Evermore sound has never been bigger and richer, with the harmony vocals of the three brothers allowed full space to weave their magic over the listener.
Don't be surprised to hear these tunes wafting from a stadium concert somewhere near you sometime soon. Recommended.
