Probably the greatest 'underground' phenomenon in New Zealand at present, with a reputation built upon the combined brilliance of his two previous albums 'Abstract Arrival' and 'Behind Locked Doors' (released when aged 16 and 18, respectively), and the fact that, up to mid-2006, he had only ever played one live gig to support his solo material (mostly because his time has been taken up fronting Wellington's current agit-pop darlings, So So Modern.)
'Phantom Limbs' was originally a limited edition release in 2005, the packaging hand-crafted by the singer-songwriter and delivered to a select number of fans. Despite the low-key nature of the release, however, the quality of the album was irresistible, and it quickly garnered glowing reviews, with comparisons to the best work of various artists: Radiohead, Elliot Smith, Sigur Ros and Ben Folds Five (to name just some of the names bandied about).
And with good reason - Gilmour's intricately layered songs are a marvel of songwriting genius and musical inventiveness that makes it difficult to believe the entire album was written and performed by Gilmour alone. Centred around his piano playing, the rhythms and tunes swirl around like a whirlwind of barely-contained manic energy. By turns intelligent, intense and intriguing, this is an album that belongs in the collections of good music lovers everywhere.
With so many superlatives already having been used to describe this amazing release, we can but add one more to the list: recommended.
