Smoke Notes

The term "long-awaited" is going to be bandied about a lot when people talk about this album - it has been five long years since their gorgeous debut EP Emo, and the recording for this album began in 2003 with the results having been tweaked and pondered on very seriously in the ensuing years.
But the effect of all the love and consideration poured into these recordings is immediately obvious, from the whirly opener 'Cannot Tell', to the closing Sparklehorse-esque mini-track 'What I Do' - in between, NZ's favourite sons Cassette take the listener from acoustic ballads to electric rockers, one minute plucking at your heartstrings and the next kicking your arse and casually swearing at you.
Featuring former members of Head Like A Hole, Baconfoot, Letterbox Lambs and Hell Is Other People, Cassette's sound is still not easy to pigeonhole or anticipate, instead this album incorporates pieces of what made the member's previous musical outfits so popular and builds on them to create a whole other beast of a band.
Main man Tom Watson's emotionally charged lyrics are delivered very deliberately paced and ambiguous, his thoughtful phrasing as reminiscent of obvious influences like Neil Young as his guitar-wrangling is.
Atmospheric swishing cymbals and piano on quieter songs give way to rockier numbers with a sense of thumping mischief that reflects the Cassette live show, and perfectly complement the epic hooky choruses and soaring BVs that are all over Cut For Summer. Highly Recommended.
