The Mint Chick's second full-length release finally sees this Auckland 'spazzy, heavy, pop' band (their own words) realise the potential that has been waiting to bloom since their inception in 2002.
Their first long-player, last years F**k the Golden Youth had moments of brilliance, but was undermined by the production, recorded as it was in a Northland shed. And, after the promise of the two stunning EPs that had preceded it (Octagon Octagon Octagon and Anti-Tiger), wasn't quite the earth-shattering release that many in the New Zealand music scene had been looking forward to.
This however, is. Diverse, dynamic and definitely not dumb - Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! is a testament to a band who have developed all their various musical powers to their height. From the catchy pop of the title track and 'You're Just as Confused as I am', to the fuzzy bass-riff-driven punk of 'Ockham's Razor' and 'Don't Turn Me on to Just to Turn On Me', and the Devo-esque angular art-rock tunes 'If My Arm Was A Mic Stand, Would You Hold My Hand?' and 'This Is Your Last Chance To Be Famous My Love' (yes, they're also not shy of long song titles) the Mint Chicks have produced one of the most outstanding and distinctive New Zealand albums of the year.
A must-have for fans of guitar rock. Highly recommended.
