Thrashing Marlin are the combined talents of David Donaldson and Steve Roche, both of whom have featured in various Wellington-based musical projects, from the theatre-musical projects of Six Volts, to helping create the soundtrack to the Lord of the Rings, to the genre-mixing experimentation of The Labcoats.

This is the Thrashing Marlin's third album, following on from their critically acclaimed self-titled 1996 release, and 1999's Garage Sailors. Both of those albums were full of inventive tunes and musical innovation, and this album is no different, with all manner of brass, string, wind and percussive instruments making their way into the mix. Not that this distracts from the strong underlying melodic nature of the songs - tunes like 'Hardly a Day', 'Solomon's Song' and 'Misery's Hole' are sing-along classics, which at times, with Roche's voice inhabiting the same kiwi-inflected vocal range as Don McGlashan, sound like a slightly more avant garde version of the Mutton Birds (not entirely unsurprising, given the guest presence of Mutton Bird's guitarist David Long, as well as Chris O'Connor who played in McGlashan's Seven Sisters touring band). Not that the band shy away from experimentation: 'Boo Bam' is a three minute musical melange of samples, guitar squeals and bouncing percussion, and the final track on the album 'All you've got Someday', is built around a vocal sample of kinetic sculptor/film-maker Len Lye describing ... something.

As well as Long and O'Connor, the album features a who's who of Wellington musical talent, including local jazz legends Jeff Henderson and Anthony Donaldson, Tim Prebble (Luke Buda), Riki Gooch (TrinityRoots) and Janet Roddick (Six Volts), the latter of whom lends her considerable vocal talents to the electronica-tinted 'Tilt of the Earth' and the hauntingly beautiful 'Sea of Tranquility'.

An album of diverse and original music, but one which also manages the trick of being accessible and instantly likeable. Highly recommended.
