It's no surprise that Albert Hammond Jnr's debut solo album is a little slice of pop perfection, coming as he does from such fine bloodstock - his father was a hugely successful songwriter-for-hire in the 70s, and Albert Jnr is the axeman behind one of pop/rock's stellar successes of recent years, the Strokes.
Hammond has been quoted as saying that this album is a reaction to his songs having been rejected by that band, and you'd imagine the other members are kicking themselves a little over that, as Yours to Keep is as hit-packed as any of the Strokes' albums. However, don't expect a Strokes-facsimile here - sure there are jagged guitar riffs and drum-machine-accurate backing beats aplenty, but Hammond's songcraft and delivery owe more to the Beach Boys and the Beatles than his day job bands' influences such as the Velvet Underground and Ramones.
Joined by talented session players including Sean Lennon, Ben Kweller, Julian Casablancas, The Mooney Suzuki's Sammy James Jr and even Strokes manager Ryan Gentles, and more than holding his own as both vocalist and songwriter, Albert Hammond Jnr's debut is accomplished and strikingly infectious - brimming with contagious choruses and indie quirks. Recommended.
