Bachelorette is Annabel Alpers, formerly of now legendary 90s Christchurch indie-popsters Hawaii 5-0, who re-emerged onto the New Zealand music scene in 2005 with a stunning 7-track EP The End Of Things.
This is Bachelorette's first full-length player, and the promise shown on her earlier release is fully realized here. The music is a mesh of psychedelic, indie and acoustic pop with a healthy helping of organs, synths and assorted other instruments weaving in and out of the mix, made all the more remarkable for the fact that Alpers plays virtually all the instruments on the album herself, and the fact that she recorded the whole thing single-handedly in a hut in the wilds of Canterbury that was built by her Grandad!
Not that you'd ever know - Alpers is obviously a dab hand at producing and mixing, and with a mastering job done by New Zealand sound guru extraordinaire Dale Cotton, the end result is a crystal-clear recording that beautifully frames Alper's extraordinary voice and innovative musical creations. Recommended.
