New Zealand seems to be going through something of a resurgence of big band funky soul, with releases by Auckland's Opensouls ('Kaleidoscope') and One Million Dollars ('Soup Kitchen') from earlier this year now being joined by this groovy self-titled offering from the Hawke's Bay based Tropical Downbeat Orchestra.
The seven-piece band lay down a fine line in jazz/soul/funk. Lead singer Margot Pierard knows the part she has to play perfectly: at times belting it out like an old school gospel legend, at others pulling it back to a sexy sensual croon, she's very much the centrepiece around which the band weave their funky beats and jazzy grooves. Not to say that the band don't get their moments to shine. The virtuosity of the players is given ample room to shine through, just listen to the horns rising to a crescendo on 'Take a Ride', or the the drum break from 'Soul Funky' to get a feeling or just how good these players are.
Given their name, it's not surprising the band pull a couple of jazzier downbeat numbers out of the bag as well - the supremely relaxing 'Premier Downbeat' and aptly entitled 'Gospel' being the standout low-tempo tracks off this album - but the band also swing into full party mode with aplomb - just see if you can get all the way through listening to 'Take a Ride' or the aforementioned 'Soul Funky' without feeling the urge to shake some booty. An outstanding debut release from a band with a big future. Recommended.
