Smoke Notes

Here's an unattributed factoid I found on that powerful research tool, the internet, regarding the nostalgically-monikered Cold War Kids: "During their tour of the UK, the band used over 100 guitars". How cutely informative is that nugget? And, if true, it says something about the financial pull these guys now have - they've crested the wave of underground-turned-mainstream sound, most of the proponents of which are directly inspired by the Strokes' success at doing the same, yet the 'Kids have managed to stay fresh and original sounding despite the frenzy and competition.
The Cali indie rockers' success is a real triumph of new media, getting their start thanks to much coverage in weblogs and online word of mouth, followed by a series of highly-hyped, ebullient live shows. Infectious and intelligent tracks like 'We Used to Vacation' mark Robbers & Cowards out as a triumph of what Rolling Stone described as "a gorgeous piece of geek-rock soul", and the blues motifs coupled with jangly, clangy guitar make it an exceptionally listenable body of work not too dissimilar to the likes of the White Stripes - but probably better compared to newer-indie contemporaries that Cold War Kids have met on the tour circuit, such as Tapes & Tapes and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, both of which they have toured with. An ultra-modern must-have.
