When it was announced that ex-The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr was working with Isaac Brock's Modest Mouse on their new album, the indie-rock world did a collective double-take. Could this be right? Brit-pop's first guitar-hero teaming up with an American indie-rock combo? Well as it turns out, it is correct. In fact Marr has since been confirmed as a full time member of the group. And immediately his presence is felt. We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank is awash with his trademark strokes of genius. Those little melodic flourishes and textures help make this Modest Mouse's best album by rather a long shot and perhaps the first truly great guitar-based album of 2007. Marr's input aside, it's clear that the hulking Brock is still main 'Mouse here. His witty lyrics and distinctive, lisping yelp is still the focal point of Modest Mouse.
Something of a late-bloomer in the music business, Modest Mouse formed in the mid-nineties and after several independent releases, were signed to Epic in 2000 for the brilliant The Moon And Antarctica. Although this album sold moderately well, it was 2004's Good News For People Who Like Bad News that really broke the band. Smash single 'Float On', with it's timely Franz Ferdinand-esque bounce became a mainstream crossover hit - covered recently for a Ford advert by the contestants of American Idol!
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank looks set to continue the group's rise, debuting at the top of the Billboard charts with a massive 130,000 sales in it's first week. Not bad for an unassuming indie band from Washington! First single 'Dashboard' continues where 'Float On' left off but to these ears it's 'Florida' that has radio hit written all over it, with The Shins' James Mercer popping in and piping up on the chorus. 'Missed The Boat' is another contender, but it's impossible to pick highlights here – all fourteen tracks on this album are as catchy as hell - yet clever enough to last for years. Highly Recommended.
