Smoke Notes

The Earlies are a quartet with the rather situation of having members spread over two continents – with half of the group living in Manchester and the other residing in Texas. Despite (or perhaps because of) this transatlantic divide, the music they make is cohesive - a perfect mix of British Folk and American Psychedelic. Just about every track here could work as an great acoustic-folk song but when expanded and coloured in the studio, they are transported to a whole other, far more exciting place.
Bouncy moments, like the album's title track, find a kindred spirit in The Flaming Lips or The Polyphonic Spree - big drums and spacey, widescreen production. Elsewhere (and more often) though, the laid back, deadpan vocal delivery bring to mind The Beta Band and Beck (especially on 'Burn The Liars') – the British/American cross-pollination evident once again.
Since their wonderful 2004 debut These Were The Earlies, the music has taken a more sombre turn and it is evident they have taken in some Prog and Krautrock influences. 'Bad Is As Bad Does' includes some bursts of appropriately fruity Prog-synth while the repetitive patterns throughout, reflect the German influence. "Lush" is definitely still an adjective that comes to mind when listening to The Enemy Chorus. When playing this music live, the group's number often swells to twelve players and many of these additional musicians have been employed in the studio this time around as well. Highly orchestrated string and horn sections give the album a distinct "Sgt. Pepper's" feel and there's even some touches of Sitar - with the closing track 'Breaking Point' dissolving into a full Indian orchestra piece. An instant classic and Highly Recommended.
