This New York trio have been quietly doing their thing since the mid-nineties, gaining critical acclaim along the way yet always remaining something of an enigma. Comprised of Japanese vocalist Kazu Makino and Italian twin brothers Simone & Amadeo Pace, the band started life as a sort of "No Wave" style band with more than a passing resemblance to Sonic Youth, but over the years their sound has steadily evolved into something altogether more compelling an original.
23 is their second album for British label 4AD and it sees them hitting on a softer, dreamier sound - more akin to the music that made that label famous (Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance) - rather than the economic, sinewy sounds of their previous albums, released on (Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley's label) Smells Like Records and Touch & Go. Makino's eerie vocals hover over thick, sonic guitar melodies and persistent, shuffling drums, evoking Slowdive or (another 4AD alumni) Lisa Gerrard.
With some big guns on board - Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio) producing and Alan Moulder (PJ Harvey, My Bloody Valentine, The Killers) and Rich Costey (Bloc Party, Muse) sharing mixing duties – you know 23 is going to be a sonic treat. And it doesn't disappoint - with such a multi-faceted sound, this is an album that gets better with every listen. An extremely pleasant journey and one we highly recommend taking.
