Smoke Notes

New Zealand's answer to Calexico return for album number three, with a rejuvenated line-up and a fresh take on the country slash high-octane harmonies that have defined both releases and live shows to date. Original members Andrew McKenzie (vocals, guitar) and Davey Geard (drums, vocals) are joined by local lads Nato Hickey (Paselode, Fly My Pretties) on bass and Adam Ladley (Velvetones, The Bonnie Scarlets) on guitar and keys – adding to the fine musical pedigree that the group already boasts (see Letterbox Lambs, Grand Lodge, D-Super and Maryland Music Fountain for starters). Throw in a "boys choir" of backing vocalists (in reality a pool of muso friends including Age Pryor, Luke Buda and Craig Terris) and production and recording duties courtesy of Brett Stanton and you have a line-up that should kick the Wellington = Dub Capital stereotype squarely in the guts.
Despite swearing that the racing car-centric imagery is a bit of an old joke, McKenzie still throws in a lot of speed-styled similes amongst the Americana-inspired guitars, horns and spacious backgrounds here, with a particularly kiwi flavour despite the Nick Cave and Drag City artists comparisons that could be drawn. There's more of a sixties/Nuggets kind of influence on this album than on the previous two, and it's a welcome addition to the group's musical arsenal, with some tidy harmonies and cute rhythmic ideas that showcase the talent pool that the band assembled in Wellington's Car Club over the recording period.
'Terraplane Twilight' is the best yet from Grand Prix and sets the scene for even better and bigger things to come from these good ol' local boys.
