Smoke Notes

It's hard to know what to expect from an SJD album - sure, you know it will be clever, thoughtful and harmonically on the button – but the entity known as SJD is an ever-changing and elusive beast. For live shows the band is a loose collective of individually-talented musicians, quietly led by Sean James Donnelly (the SJD) but recorded output is less raw, more focused, and with increasingly slick production values that defy the otherwise back-shed kiwi aesthetic – sometimes a collaborative recording effort, but just as often a solo production.
Donnelly is a quiet achiever, starting late in the recorded music world but making up in quality what he may lack in youth (at least compared to the dominant MTV teen-arena), and this album is yet another suburb reaction to the music industry, suburban parenting, and NZ's geographic isolation. Don McGlashan once described SJD as "like this impressionist painter that's been let loose in a recording studio" and that certainly rings true for Songs from a Dictaphone: luxuriant synth-pop backgrounds build and fall beneath pure, cerebral vocals, with Donnelly referencing prog rock as un-self-consciously as he does electronic soul and gospel.
The combined effect washes over the listener and requires, at least, a second or third listening before you can stand back and really see the whole picture - although this album is definitely more accessible than its predecessors, and certainly more radio-friendly, with three singles from the album already getting regular airplay on student radio. An album of rich and rewarding music for grown-ups.
