Classically trained Icelandic quartet grace us with their debut longplayer after their breathtaking 4 track EP AnimaminA in 2005.
These four ladies first came to wider attention as the string section for countrymen Sigur Ros - live and on the band's landmark '( )' album and it's follow up Takk. 'Kurr' occupies that same mysterious musical landscape as their more famous "big-brother" band. It is a sound that is almost impossible to describe to the uninitiated and whenever a reviewer tries, adjectives like "otherworldly" and "ethereal" invariably start to get tossed around.
Amiina coax the most hauntingly beautiful melodies out of some very unusual sources. Although all players are classically-trained, they also have a love of experimental and found sound recording. As well as an array of classical instruments there are as many homemade and unorthodox ones; the 'Glass Harp' (rubbed wine glasses), 'Musical Saw' (hand saw played with a violin bow) feature prominently on 'Kurr' as well as the subtle use of ambient electronic loops.
The soundscapes Amiina create on 'Kurr' have that same childlike "broken music-box" quality peculiar to bands coming out of Iceland. Like Sigur Ros and Mum (and a few others), Amiina straddle Indie, Electronica and Classical music to create something truly unique and compelling.
