Wellington favourites the Phoenix Foundation have been busy since we last heard from them with 2005's gold-selling 'Pegasus'. There's been solo albums, babies, collaborations and of course working on the soundtrack for Taika Waititi's cult gem 'Eagle Vs. Shark'. Thankfully the band has found some time in their busy schedules to record album number three – 'Happy Endings'.
Recorded once again with award-winning Producer Lee Prebble at the Capital's famed studio "The Surgery", 'Happy Endings' sees Sam Scott, Luke Buda and co. expanding their dreamy indie-pop sound even further with a lush widescreen treatment and skillful songwriting. The result is some of their best material yet.
Kicking off strongly with first single 'Bright Grey' (with a video directed by Taika Waititi – perhaps returning the favour for the boys soundtrack work), the album is an enjoyable journey from start to finish. The release of 'Happy Endings' also sees a slight label-change, with the band now part of the legendary Flying Nun (now a subsidary of Warners) roster - and songs like 'Gandalf' seem to reflect this move, sounding at home and as good as anything that that label has ever released in it's heyday.
Dinky Indie-pop happily clashes with flourishes of Prog-rock pompousity – all gloriously good fun of course! It goes without saying that we're expecting big things from this one.
