On the follow-up to their Stones Throw debut Wildflowers, Connie Price & The Keystones step up with a heavyweight dynamic soundtrack-inspired hip hop album, Tell Me Something, released on Ubiquity Records.
While their debut was instrumental, Tell Me Something is the opposite, featuring a marquee-filling list of quality MCs.
The legendary Percee P, Wildchild (Lootpack), Ohmega Watts, Soup (Jurassic 5), Blood Of Abraham, Mykah 9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Project Blowed and vocalist Aloe Blacc provide lyrics n’ rhymes.
Having recently recorded an EP for Scion with Big Daddy Kane, and backing-up Slick Rick, Brand Nubian and Too $hort live, Connie Price & The Keystones decided to take their live hip hop exploits into the studio.
Channeling Wu-Tang and Madlib in equal parts to Schifrin and Morricone, Tell Me Something bobs and weaves through head-nodding mellower bpms to more frantic chase-scene tunes.
“Funk revivalist” and “retro” were apt tags for the music of Connie Price & The Keystones when they started out five years ago, fleshing-out raw funk 45s that rivalled the old-school collectible nuggets they were inspired by. But Tell Me Something is a new beast, the product of a deeper vision and incorporating much broader influences.
The band is led by Dan Ubick (Breakestra, Madlib’s Sound Directions) along with Todd Simon (Macy Gray, Antibalas, El Michels Affair) and features players from the likes of Plantlife, Orgone, Cake, David Holmes and DJ Z-Trip!
Disc 2 Features instrumental versions of the tracks on the first disc. |
