Smoke Notes

Raven presents the first CD anthology covering the recordings of the late great Australian folk singer / song writer JOE PAOLACCI: Southern Cross. With many tracks on CD for the first time, this is a treasure trove of contemporary / traditional folk songs. The most abiding aspect of this collection is the quality of Joe’s song writing, with all but four tracks being his own compositions. So who was Joe Paolacci? The son of Italian immigrants, Joe was a highly-regarded Melbourne musician and singer / song writer whose career began in 1971 with the duo Sam Hall (with Tim O’Brien).

He went on to work with Hollyoak, The Colonials, Captain Moonlight, Joe Paolacci Band and with many other well-known Melbourne folk bands and musicians. He was a permanent fixture on the Victorian folk music circuit. Joe died of cancer in 2009 and this collection was compiled by members of his family as a tribute to his love of music. As his friends and fellow musicians Mark Leehy and Tim O’Brien write in the liner notes: “Blessed with a remarkable voice, a finely-honed ear for the subtleties of song, and a deep love of the timeless honesty in the music and stories of “the ordinary person”, Joe could interpret a folk song like few others.”

Southern Cross brings together the strong, confident voice, the masterful playing (on guitar, banjo, and recorder), the fine composition, exquisite lyrics and the great musicianship and humanity that was Joe Paolacci. The songs include traditional pieces like ‘Flower of Magherally’, ‘Maryborough Miner’, ‘Shortnin’ Bread’ and that old sixties “contemporary folk” classic, ‘Kisses Sweeter than Wine’. You will also hear the folk tradition continued in the fine storytelling of Joe’s songs ‘Tall and True’, ‘The Southern Cross is Calling Me’, ‘I Was a Boy’, ‘Wind, Wind’ and ‘Born in Dreamy Days’.

“There is an elusive and intense mastery to both his writing and performance, made stronger by his wonderful God-given voice.” With 23 tracks, 77 minutes of superb quality audio, detailed liner notes and colour booklet, this is a must for anyone who appreciates folk music in general and song writing of the highest calibre.
